Tell us a little about yourself
Family and community have always been paramount in my life, so when I was presented with an opportunity in college to work in fund development and PR, I felt as though I had stumbled into my life’s path. I have worked with nonprofit organizations ever since – from health & human services to academics and from development to operations to management. Each organization has aligned closely with my personal values and provided me with the opportunity to make a difference.
I am part of a talented group of folks (paid and volunteer) who lead the Senior Center – a community resource that involves, enriches, and empowers seniors, and people of all ages, in our community since 1960. My husband, Matt, and 3 year old son, Connor, and I enjoy Charlottesville and all it has to offer and can often be found taking in UVA sporting events.
What brought you to Charlottesville?
I came to Charlottesville when I married my husband, Matt. He works at UVA and the opportunities for him there didn’t exist in many other places. So I readily agreed to locate because I knew there were wonderful nonprofit organizations in Charlottesville that would align with my personal values and provide me with the opportunity to make a difference.
Why did you decide to become a Future Fund Member?
While not a novice when it comes to philanthropy and volunteerism, supporting an initiative that creates awareness and an outlet for both drove my decision to join the Future Fund. Leveraging personal giving through collective grant making is a bonus.
What is your favorite aspect of being a member?
My favorite aspect is raising awareness for philanthropy and volunteerism. While many of us grew up with these things as part of our core values, there are just as many who didn’t. Creating opportunities for people to test the waters and get engaged while making a collective – and significant – impact is powerful.
Favorite philanthropist or charity?
Food Banks because of their ability to significantly impact lives immediately as well as long term. And the Senior Center, of course! Who can't get behind an organization that impacts the lives of 8,000 of our family, friends and neighbors each year!
Three things you can't live without?
Family, friends, and the ability to make a difference for others. Family and friends make life worthwhile - the laughter, the tears, and all. They also ground you in your efforts to make a difference for others, giving you the context and support needed to do what really needs to be done.
Favorite Local Hangout?
Anything that is kid-friendly and familiy-oriented (speaking as the mother of a 3 year old!).
