Giving Opportunities

The CACF staff are always learning about interesting projects for which nonprofit organizations are seeking funding.

The list below, “Giving Opportunities,” is an attempt to make the broader public aware of these projects.  It is continually updated and has proven to be a very effective way to help nonprofit organizations in our region.  If you have questions about any of the projects described below, please contact the nonprofit organization directly, or call the CACF office.  If you would like to submit an article to Giving Opportunities please contact Sofia Case, Donor Relations and Programs Assistant, at scase@cacfonline.org.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville

Sunrise Park: Sunrise will be Habitat’s first trailer-park transformation, a conversion of 16 decaying trailers into a durable mixed-income neighborhood. At least 24 homes will be available to homeowners and renters earning between 0% and 60% of AMI. By not displacing current residents, Habitat is setting a national precedent to be replicated across the country. HFH is seeking a lead donor (or donors) to help build one to two multi-family buildings at Sunrise to:

• Provide rental units for current Sunrise residents to ensure that they are not displaced during or after construction
• Provide a model mixed income “development within a development” for Sunrise residents, Habitat homeowners and a mixture of market rate renters and owners
• Either provide a permanent, reliable revenue source for Habitat (rental income would be reinvested in our core mission of building simple, decent and affordable homes) or…
• Allow Habitat to recapture most of the original donation when some or all of the market rate units are sold as condos. This capital could then be reinvested in Habitat’s next building projects or returned to donors

Each multi-family building will cost approximately $2.5M. Habitat is open to creative partnerships on the project. Rezoning is complete. Habitat anticipates breaking ground in early 2011.

Southwood: Currently the largest concentration of affordable housing in the Greater Charlottesville area. Since purchasing the 370 trailer park in 2007, Habitat and partners have invested more than $750K in critical, immediate repairs and infrastructure. Redevelopment is anticipated to begin in 2014.

Southwood needs:
1) a planning grant to expedite redevelopment ($750K)
2) funds to hire a social services coordinator for three years ($150K) and 3) funds to offset the cost of ongoing, emergency infrastructural work ($100K annually)

House Sponsorships: Each year, Habitat seeks philanthropic individuals, foundations, churches, businesses, and civic organizations to provide $60K to “sponsor” homes. On average we seek eight to ten sponsors a year.

In addition to large grants, Habitat relies predominantly on smaller donations that aid our core mission of building homes in partnership with deserving partner families.
