Giving Opportunities

The CACF staff are always learning about interesting projects for which nonprofit organizations are seeking funding.

The list below, “Giving Opportunities,” is an attempt to make the broader public aware of these projects.  It is continually updated and has proven to be a very effective way to help nonprofit organizations in our region.  If you have questions about any of the projects described below, please contact the nonprofit organization directly, or call the CACF office.  If you would like to submit an article to Giving Opportunities please contact Sofia Case, Donor Relations and Programs Assistant, at scase@cacfonline.org.

Replacing Brett: Help the Charlottesville Police Department purchase a new K9 Dog

Last Updated Oct 2009

The Charlottesville Police Department’s K9 teams perform a valuable service for the department and the community, extending the force’s reach and giving officers and alternative to deadly force in some circumstances. Police dogs are highly trained, and that training can be expensive. And like people, they have limited working lives. One of the department’s dogs, “Brett” (seen here with his human partner, Officer Lynn Childers) will be retiring soon. The department would like some assistance purchasing a new dog so that Brett can retire. Replacing a K9 unit dog, however, costs approximately $9,000 and doesn’t easily fit within normal budgeting cycles.

“I would like Brett’s replacement to go seamlessly,” says Childers, “without a long gap waiting to replace him. That way I will be able to do it on his terms (when he is ready) and not have to push him beyond his capabilities. Our K9 trainer imports dogs every few months, and if the right one comes along I'd like to be able to move on it. This is more ideal then waiting until you need one...then searching for months for the right one.”

The Charlottesville Police Department Foundation (www.cvillepolicefoundation.org) seeks a local funding partner to help purchase a new dog for the department. The CPDF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group of independent citizens formed to help the Charlottesville Police Department achieve its strategic goals. In addition to its Training, Housing, and Awards Dinner programs, the CPDF occasionally underwrites strategically important items that are reasonably beyond the reach of the City budget or fall outside budgeting cycles.
