The Prana Fund in the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation accepts proposals once a year in November and makes at least one grant each year to a local organization working with middle and lower-income children.
Eligibility- The agency must be a 501(c) (3) public charity working in Charlottesville and/or Albemarle County.
- The Prana Fund will not support endowment campaigns, annual appeals, or gifts to individuals.
Emphasis
In 2008, this award will be eligible to nonprofit organizations working in Charlottesville and Albemarle that address the needs of middle and lower-income children and focus on:
- Environmental Education;
- OR Fine or Performing Arts;
- OR A combination of 1 and 2 above.
Special consideration will be given to projects that incorporate hands-on learning and a multi-disciplinary approach integrating arts and the environment. Programs that reach a broader range of children are encouraged.
Amount of Grant
Recognizing that nonprofit agencies have different fundraising capacities, agencies are requested to tailor their proposals to one of the following options:
- $25,000 outright grant, no match required or;
- $25,000 outright grant with potential matching grant. Agency will be awarded a $25,000 outright grant. In addition, if an agency raises $25,000 in new funds within six months of the initial grant, it will receive an additional $25,000 from the Prana Fund. No partial matches will be awarded.

- evidence of 501(c)(3) public charity status
- agency’s most recent financial statement
- one-page project budget
- list of project leaders
- list of board of directors and key staff members
The recipient will be announced by December 31, 2008.
