The Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band in CACF Announces Grantees totaling $ 270,000
Twice a year, the BAMAWorks Fund in CACF awards gifts through a competitive grant cycle. CACF announces the following Bama Works grants as recommended by Dave Matthews Band in support of non-profits in the Charlottesville area:
1. Albemarle County Schools (Jack Jouett Middle School) - $3,000 to replace instruments for sixth, seventh and eighth band students.
2. Albemarle County Schools (Stone Robinson Elementary) - $5,000 to partially fund the renovation of the school’s main playground.
3. Albemarle County Schools (Walton Middle School) - $5,000 to support the Merging Music with Technology program that will provide students with individualized music instruction.
4. Albemarle Housing Improvement Program - $7,500 to support the Emergency Home Repair Program that provides minor yet essential repairs for impoverished households in Albemarle County.
5. Alliance for Interfaith Ministries - $5,000 to provide emergency assistance and economic counseling to families threatened with homelessness or the loss of utilities.
6. American Red Cross – Central Virginia Regional Chapter - $5,000 to support the Disaster Services Trailer Project to increase disaster planning, preparedness, and responses to residents of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
7. Arts Center in Orange - $3,000 to provide an outreach program that offers art and music performances for the underserved in Orange County.
8. Blue Ridge Area Food Bank - $8,000 to support the BackPack program that supplies nutritious food to 1,800 low-income children during the weekends and holidays when they do not have access to school provided meals.
9. Bridge Ministry - $4,000 to replace a commercial oven in the kitchen of the main campus that serves twenty-five male residents of their twelve month program.
10. Camp Holiday Trails - $5,000 to support the campership fund which provides financial assistance to economically disadvantaged Charlottesville area youth with chronic illnesses.
11. Charlottesville City Schools (Charlottesville High School) - $5,000 to refurbish the CHS library.
12. Charlottesville City Schools (Walker Upper Elementary School) - $2,000 to support the drama club, an after-school program, which is a part of EDGE (Extended Day Generates Excellence) program that serves Walker students.
13. Charlottesville Community Design Center - $5,000 to support the City Bus Shelter Project.
14. Charlottesville Symphony Society - $2,000 to support an interactive orchestral themed program to address challenges fourth and fifth graders encounter today, such as bullying, obesity, and peer pressure while simultaneously introducing instrument families.
15. Charlottesville/Albemarle Commission on Children and Families - $5,100 to provide scholarships for disadvantaged youth to participate in summer camps and enrichment programs through its 2010 FUNd.
16. Church of Our Savior (Nursing Homes Swing) - $3,000 to bring live musical performances to area nursing and assisted living homes.
17. Elk Hill - $4,000 to fund Education for Employment for troubled teens from Charlottesville and nearby counties.
18. Ellis Acres Memorial Park, Inc. - $9,500 to renovate the restroom facility of the historic Buckingham Training School that is being renovated into a community center and park.
19. Field School of Charlottesville - $6,100 to provide scholarship funding for a disadvantaged student to attend the Field School, a private boys’ middle school.
20. Fluvanna County - $10,000 to construct a concession stand and restrooms for the girls’ softball field at Carysbrook in Fluvanna County.
21. Fluvanna County Historical Society - $5,000 to restore and preserve the New Fork School, Fluvanna County’s first African-American one room schoolhouse.
22. Fluvanna County Schools (Families Learning Together Program) - $3,500 to support a family literacy program.
23. Grace Works - $5,000 to continue its afterschool program that serves children from Greer and Agnor Hurt Elementary Schools in Albemarle County.
24. Kid Pan Alley - $5,000 to continue a successful group songwriting program that encourages elementary school children to express their creativity.
25. Lewis and Clark Exploratory Center - $5,000 to fund Camp Explore 2010, a two week summer camp that services new immigrants and recent refugees identified by the International Rescue Committee.
26. Louisa County Historical Society - $4,000 to train college and high school students to preserve history by creating digital images of existing historical society archives for off-site storage and online exhibits.
27. Louisa Downtown Development Corp - $5,000 to encourage students’ involvement in music at the Louisa Art Center.
28. Madison House - $8,000 to provide operational funding for Madison House programs supporting local children.
29. Municipal Band of Charlottesville - $3,000 to support the 2010 summer concerts at the Paramount Theater.
30. Music Resource Center - $5,000 to expand a dance program to low-income students.
31. National MS Society, Blue Ridge Chapter - $6,000 to provide a direct financial assistance program providing lifelines to independent living and thereby improving the quality of life for people with MS and their families.
32. Nelson County Community Development Foundation - $10,000 to provide dental services to low-income adults in Nelson County for a nominal fee at a dental trailer located on the grounds of the Rockfish Valley Community Center.
33. Paramount Theater of Charlottesville - $7,500 to support the Arts Reach Education program that provides scholarship tickets to area school children for events scheduled during the school day.
34. Piedmont Regional Education Program (Ivy Creek School) - $5,000 to provide enrichment classes that offer a variety of creative arts, vocational activities, and two classes that integrate enrichment cooking with the vocational program to develop job readiness skills.
35. Piedmont Virginia Community College Educational Foundation - $10,000 to provide start-up funding for a licensed practical nursing program at PVCC.
36. Rapidan Better Housing Corporation - $7,500 to expand the Emergency Home Repair Program specifically to provide home repairs or modifications that meet the disability-related safety needs of disabled persons in Orange County.
37. Reading Window School - $3,000 to provide scholarships for low income struggling readers to attend the Reading Window School in Louisa County.
38. Renaissance School - $6,000 for Tuition Assistance Program to expand its student base and build diversity in the student population.
39. Rockfish Sanctuary - $5,000 to renovate an abandoned barn at Miller School for wildlife rehabilitation and to provide program support.
40. ROSMY - $5,000 to develop awareness of ROSMY’s programs and training of youth service providers to increase and strengthen resources available to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) youth in the Charlottesville region and increase distribution of the CRISIS, an informational pact.
41. Salvation Army - $10,000 to renovate the Salvation Army Emergency Shelter.
42. Shenandoah National Park Trust - $7,000 to build an air quality educational trail and to expand a teacher education program at Shenandoah National Park.
43. Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression - $2,500 to continue the Story Line project, a summer collaborative hands-on art project for area children.
44. UVA (Dept. of Pediatrics) - $1,450 to provide asthma education and spacers to children in Greene County schools in order to improve asthma treatment.
45. UVA (Men’s Leadership Project) - $5,000 to support a leadership and mentoring program that pairs UVA students with boys at Walker Upper Elementary School (Charlottesville City School) and Burley Middle School (Albemarle County School) for one-on-one and group activities.
46. UVA (Dept. of Medicine) - $5,000 to support the Camp Holiday Trails program for families living with HIV/AIDS.
47. Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) - $5,000 to support residential fellowships at VCCA for Charlottesville area artists.
48. WHTJ (Commonwealth Public Broadcasting Corp.) - $5,000 to support Charlottesville Inside –Out, a locally produced PBS show, hosted by Terri Allard that highlights the people and places that define Charlottesville.
49. WVPT (Shenandoah Educational Television Corp.) - $7,000 to fund the fourth Kids Book Festival, a free literary event with over 30 activity booths, free books, food, and entertainment in Charlottesville in fall 2010.
50. World Foundation for Children (The Volunteer Farms) - $5,000 to create a volunteer farm in Culpepper that provides fresh produce to the Jefferson Area Food Bank.
51. Young Audiences of Virginia - $1,500 to support the Total Quality Music project, a program designed to enhance the curriculum and support the SOL’s in two public schools in the greater Charlottesville area by providing live music performances and activities for elementary and middle school students.
