Local Students Announce UVA’s Teen Health Center as the 2009 Youth Service Award Winner.
Every year the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF) forms the Youth Service Award Committee, made up of one high school senior from nine local high schools. The Youth Service Award was created by CACF to encourage youth to engage in philanthropy. Over the course of six months, students review proposals from local nonprofit organizations that have applied for the Youth Service Award – a $10,000 grant from the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation to support a local nonprofit serving area youth.
The students will announce the 2009 winner at Cityspace in the Charlottesville Community Design Center on Monday April 27 at 6:00pm.

The UVa Teen Health Center began providing services to adolescents in 1991and currently logs 4000 patient visits a year for a broad range of health issues. The YSA Award will help create the Breathing Space program, an initiative focused on prevention and improving communication and family involvement. “Our YSA grant allows Breathing Space to give teens the resources to live a healthy lifestyle, yet learn or change through their own experiences with the offered counseling and support. We believe that our grant will directly impact the Teen Health Center and contribute to the longevity of the program by paying for nurses, medical tests, and examinations while opening access for more teens”, stated Lena Shi, YSA Student Member.
