CENTER FOR NONPROFIT EXCELLENCE ANNOUNCES NEW SPONSORS AND EXTENDS APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR BOARD DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (July 14, 2009) –The Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE) announced today the latest list of sponsors for its new, signature board training program, the Board Development Academy, as well as an extended application deadline.

The Academy was developed through a generous planning grant from the Smyth Foundation. Hantzmon Weibel was the original “Pillar of Excellence” sponsor of the Academy. Joining Hantzmon Wiebel as a “Pillar of Excellence” sponsor is Wachovia Bank.

‘We’re thrilled to have such strong support in the community for the Board Development Academy, said Cristine Nardi, CNE’s Executive Director. Our sponsors clearly recognize that this program meets the demand for training, from both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors in this community, to develop high-performing board members, a crucial component of any successful nonprofit.”

The Board Development Academy is the first of its kind in Central Virginia to focus on nonprofit board leadership, providing the skills, knowledge and concrete tools to apply to service in the nonprofit sector. The Academy has a consistent, professional group of educators, a defined curriculum and a commitment to maximizing the potential of the nonprofit sector.

“Employers in Central Virginia with a commitment to community service and engagement will benefit from the Academy. Employees educated and trained through the Academy who serve on nonprofit boards or commissions will maintain the company’s reputation for community service as skilled, valued board members,” said Nardi.

The CNE Board Development Academy seeks men and women from across Central Virginia who desire to engage in nonprofit board work as a means to serve the community. The Academy nominations deadline has been extended through August 15, 2009. Participants will be notified of acceptance by September 1, 2009. Up to 20 participants will be selected each year in a competitive selection process and some financial scholarships will be available. In addition, payment for the Academy can be made in up to 3 installments during the session.

“We recognize that this new professional development opportunity may not yet be part of an individual or organization’s professional development budget. In response, we’ve structured a payment plan option in order to ensure that those qualified applicants have the financial flexibility to participate,” Nardi reported.
