BETTER WORLD BETTER

Last Updated Sep 2009

Better World Betty is a local non-profit organization whose primary mission is to make environmentally-conscious daily living choices easy, fun and accessible to the community. The site offers innovative, yet practical tools for green living: an online directory of local businesses, an events calendar, search tool for hard to recycle items, a Betty blog. This approach, which has gained wide-spread community support, encourages more sustainable living and promotes protection of our natural resources.

Betty’s Advisory Board includes twelve community leaders in the sustainability movement including Timothy Beatley; Teresa Heinz Professor Of Sustainable Communities; Paxton Marshall, UVA Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering; Eric Gilchrist of CCDC’s Spark program; Ryan Jacoby of Habitat for Humanity; Kate Collier, owner of Feast!; Dave Norris, Mayor of Charlottesville.

Better World Betty seeks funding to strengthen community involvement and inspire action through website enhancements including: a residential/business carbon calculator, interactive quiz, podcasts, how-to demonstrations, and a directory search tool. Beyond the site, a community advocacy program including wallet cards and “green recipes” would further serve Betty’s environmental mission as well as the larger community‘s goal of health and sustainability for future generations.

Better World Betty is a joint project of the Virginia Organizing Project.
