PERFORMERS EXCHANGE PROJECT "TRANSCENDENTAL AMERICA"

Last Updated Sep 2009

 PERFORMERS EXCHANGE PROJECT

 "TRANSCENDENTAL AMERICA"

Performers Exchange Project (PEP) requests funding for the development of an original performance that will be premiered in collaboration with Live Arts in December 2009. The mission of PEP is, in a nutshell, to promote community collaboration and exchange, both locally and in connection with our global community. PEP's new project will represent four focus areas: arts, humanities, education and service. PEP will be developing a world premiere work of performance art. The performance itself will be premiered in Charlottesville, but they also expect to share their work with other artists and audiences through touring both here in the U.S. and abroad.

The performance will be directed by Martha Mendenhall, assisted by Kara McLane Burke and feature PEP artists Doreen Bechtol, Jennifer Hoyt Tidwell, and Sian Richards. Also performing will be guest artist Kay Ferguson. A primary focus for PEP will be emphasizing collaboration and exchange in the rehearsal room, in attracting and including community members, and in offering the thematic material of the project for education and conversation.

In the past, PEP has manifested this mission through hosting the work of the DAH theatre and presenting two summer arts carnivals: Wunderkammer and Shentai. For this project, PEP plans to co-produce and collaborate with Live Arts. Live Arts will serve as the fiscal and producing sponsor, offering PEP use of their skilled production team and their UpStage venue. Live Arts will promote and publicize all events and support the project with their solid organizational efforts. PEP brings creative/performance building innovation to the table, offering the Live Arts staff and myriad volunteers and patrons an opportunity to engage in new methods of developing theatrical performance. PEP expects this collaboration to reach throughout Charlottesville and engage and welcome all those with an interest in performance, innovative playmaking, and American history.
