Charlottesville Area Community Foundation Announces Community Endowment Grants totaling $ 144,000

 

Twice a year, the CACF Community Endowment awards funding through a competitive grant cycle. On March 2, 2009, the CACF Governing Board approved the following grants totaling $144,000 in support for non-profits in the CACF service area:

 

1.      African American Teaching Fellows of Charlottesville-Albemarle: $5,000 to provide support for education students seeking licensure to teach in the local public schools.

 

2.      Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail: $5,000 to support two fourteen week art education classes with a goal of producing art and modifying the behavior of participants from prisons in Buckingham and Fluvanna County.

 

3.      Albemarle County (CCF Scholarship Committee): $5,000 to establish the Summer FUNd to provide scholarships for local low income children to attend summer camp in 2009.

 

4.      Albemarle Housing Improvement Program (AHIP): $10,000 to support the Emergency Home Repair program that provides minor but urgent home repairs for very low-income renter and owner households in Albemarle County.

 

5.      Arts Center of Orange: $2,500 to support the Arts Center’s Outreach program that provides a variety of free arts and music experiences to the underserved residents of Orange.

 

6.      Best Buddies International: $3,000 to provide community –based programming, in collaboration with UVA and Region Ten, to create a support program for adults with intellectual disabilities living in the Charlottesville area.

 

7.      Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (BRAFB): $4,000 directed to the Thomas Jefferson Area Branch of BRAFB to provide food to hungry citizens in our service area.

 

8.      Blue Ridge Medical Center: $5,000 to support The Wellness Passport that provides a health benefits plan for people who are uninsured and low income.

 

9.      Charlottesville Community Scholarship Program: $2,500 to provide scholarships to low and moderate income city high school graduates and employees of the city and city schools who want to continue their education after high school.

 

 

10.  Charlottesville Police Department Foundation: $4,500 to help implement the Police Department’s Strategic Plan to build a more knowledgeable, skilled, and community-oriented police force by providing leadership training to its lieutenant officers through the National Criminal Justice Command College at the University of Virginia.

 

11.  FOCUS of Charlottesville Albemarle: $8,000 to assist pregnant and parenting teens to learn how to care for themselves and their babies, and to provide childcare assistance to help teens complete their education.

 

12.  James Foundation: $3,000 to support Project Thrive, an educational development project for foster children from Charlottesville and Albemarle.

 

13.  Literacy Volunteers of Louisa County: $5,000 to expand the GED and ESOL programs for Louisa County adults.

 

14.  Louisa Downtown Development Corporation: $2,000 to provide the community access to the performing arts through the Cooke-Haley Theater for one year.

 

15.  Manteo-Yogaville Emergency Response Squad (MYER): $5,000 to help MYER construct a building to house two medical emergency vehicles, medical equipment and a small office.

 

16.  Nelson County Community Development Foundation: $8,000 to support the adult dental clinic for residents of Nelson.

 

17.  OAR – Jefferson Area Community Corrections: $2,500 to provide a model program that will apply restorative justice principles in the community’s response to crime in Central Virginia.

 

18.  Piedmont Council of the Arts: $4,000 to support the Arts Access project to provide access to arts experiences for under-resourced citizens and to increase and diversify arts audiences for nonprofit cultural organizations.

 

19.  Piedmont Housing Alliance: $10,000 to support the Sustainable Home Ownership Initiative to provide home ownership counseling and incentive and gap financing to help clients achieve their homeownership goals.

 

20.  Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services Board: $4,000 to serve low-income elders from Orange County through new regional adult day care program for individuals who are frail or have dementia.

 

21.  Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D): $4,000 to provide equipment and teacher support to augment the Virginia Department of Education project that will provide all local area schools with access to the RFB&D library of audio textbooks to serve students with disabilities.

 

22.  Richmond Organization for Sexual Minority Youth (ROSMY): $5,000 to establish a support group for sexual minority youth in Central Virginia.

 

 

23.  Rx Drug Access Partnership: $5,000 to help uninsured patients from the Charlottesville Free Clinic and the Free Clinic of Central Virginia access free prescription medication.

 

24.  Salvation Army: $4,000 to provide shelter services.

 

25.  Senior Center: $5,000 to help seniors remain independent through physical fitness programs.

 

26.  The Women’s Initiative: $8,000 to support the individual Counseling Program for Low-Income Women to provide mental health services.

 

27.  Wintergreen Adaptive Skiing: $5,000 to provide staff development for the 2009-2010 winter programs.

 

28.  WorkSource Enterprises: $10,000 to provide community job placement and support services for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families participants who have disabilities.
