CACF: An Investment in the Future of Our Community
The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation is a permanent endowment dedicated to improving the quality of life for the people of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and the adjacent counties east of the Blue Ridge mountains: Greene, Orange, Louisa, Fluvanna, Buckingham, and Nelson. CACF is unique among local nonprofit organizations because through it individuals, organizations, and businesses can make contributions for the long-term benefit of the community.
CACF: Haiti Earthquake Relief Over the past several days we’ve all been struck by the human suffering resulting from the earthquake in Haiti. Many of our donors have called to ask our advice about making a charitable response. It can be difficult to determine the most effective organizations to support, but we’d like to make the following recommendations:
• The Council on Foundations' has done a particularly good job of selecting some of the best options. Here is a link to a page on their website: http://www.usig.org/disastergm/earthquakehaiti2010.asp
• In addition, we would like to recommend the Charlottesville-based Building Goodness Foundation, www.buildinggoodness.org. Building Goodness has been working in Haiti for a number of years, and while not directly involved in the rescue and recovery efforts going on right now, BGF plans to maintain and enhance its programs as the island rebuilds.
• Finally, we’d like you to be aware that CACF has established its own Haiti Relief Fund. Donors who want to support the relief and rebuilding efforts but do not wish to research and choose from among the many excellent organizations working in Haiti are encouraged to donate to this fund, from which CACF will make one or more grants later this year.
